Priceless: the Chinese put the interferring algae to good use 

Each morning the 'greenkeepers' are out on the course, the momentual fleet of junks, requisitioned to pluck the nasty little green stuff from the Yellow Sea. Only once have I heard a sailor mention it affecting their racing and that was Paul Goodison. He took a small course alteration in one race, early in the series, long before he went on to win his Laser class gold.

You can't but be in awe of the Chinese efforts to tackle a problem that could have brought the regatta to its knees. Imagine it happening in 2012. We'd still be waiting for the working party to report on the problem. Mind you, the consultants' invoice would already be presented.

Who'd have guessed the Chinese would have had the last laugh though? I'll be taking home this souvenir, a key ring with the world's most famous green growth encapsulated in clear plastic.

It is the official Qingdao algae souvenir.

The narrative card is as priceless as the key ring.

Just in case you think there is nothing that can't be conquered by this enterprising country may I point to Exhibit A: the yoghurt pot. Somehow the foil never pulls off, no matter which corner or technique you employ.

Last night provided firm evidence that such a thing as divine retribution exists.

Chuck Liddell should retire if he loses to Rashad Evans. Simple as.


Tough call: UFC may have to call time on a legend if he loses

With all due respect to Rashad, he is not destined for the heights of the UFC light heavyweight division. He is a great competitor, great athlete, clearly a wrestler of note, but not a great fighter in the tradition of great mixed martial arts exponents. Flashes of it here and there, but he does not have a fighter's instinct.

Of course, he won the heavyweight tournament in TUF Series, yet from every conceivable angle, a Liddell loss to Evans should spell the end. Forget the legend fighting on.

In fact, Dana White, the UFC President should be throwing the towel into the Octagon to close down the big man's career.

It is not because Liddell is going to get hurt in there, yet if he is going to lose to Evans, there are a raft of middle-ranking light-heavys out there who would and could beat him. The mighty should not be allowed to fall so far.

I asked White and Liddell about this very subject when they were in the UK two months ago - although we were talking about Matt Hughes at the time - and White, in real honesty, admitted that he had never had to ask one of the legends of the sport to hang up their mitts.

He added it had not got to that stage for him yet with the UFC, because it is a young sport, still developing since Zuffa's takeover in 2001, and he admitted then that calling time on the people he and the sport have grown up with would be one of the toughest calls he would have faced so far. We are a couple of weeks away from that outcome if Liddell loses.

The analogy between Matt Hughes retiring if he lost to Thiago Alves - he did lose, and he didn't retire afterwards - applies just as candidly to Liddell's career, although the big man himself defended, in that discussion, the fact that age in mixed martial arts is not necessarily an issue if you have not been in war after war in the Octagon. Yet there is the distinct scent before this contest that the humiliation of defeat against Evans would be almost unbearable for a man who has become a UFC flagship name in the last five years.

Liddell beat Tito Ortiz twice, Randy Couture twice, both great wrestlers, yet Evans is hardly in their league. In his prime, a fight, let alone a loss to Evans would have been unthinkable. Evans' style of fighting has not proved successful against Liddell over the years.

Evans is fast, can be hurtful with his hands, can strike, but can be discouraged, and has a tendency to let others make mistakes and get tired.

Liddell himself has questioned Evans's ability to take his opponents down, and when you consider that one of Liddell's greatest defensive assets is his amazing sprawl, one of the best in the sport - Ortiz could not take him down once and is/was an amazing wrestler, nor indeed could Couture in the last two fights he had with Liddell - it is difficult to see where Evans will exploit weaknesses to melt ‘The Iceman'.

That remains the bottom line. Hard to see how Evans defeats Liddell. If he does, curtains on his career.

I spent last weekend at Squires Cafe bar in Newthorpe,on the outskirts of Leeds West Yorkshire. The two day show is organised and run by local bike club Satans Slaves and raises much needed cash for local charities such as the Yorkshire Air ambulance. A Web 2.0 community launched last month, slipping right under my radar until I spotted it on MoMB and it made me look twice. eBay apparently developed a conscience when I wasn't looking and has joined forced with World of Good, Inc. to create a new community site centralized around commerce.

The WorldofGood.com mission statement is “to provide a trusted platform where individuals can create positive change through commerce, as part of a global community.” The idea central to the site is that the more you educate consumers about where their goods come from and what they are made of, the more opportunity you are giving them to affect change simply by what they are buying.

World of Good, Inc. is probably familiar to anyone who has ever shopped in a Whole Foods store or a grocery store with a natural foods section; their Fair Trade products seem to be everywhere. They've rebranded their own product line as Original Goods to separate it from the joint effort with eBay.

WorldofGood.com features articles, discussion forums, and blog posts, all about sustainable products, Fair Trade issues, and how to incorporate both into your regular purchasing habits. It will also feature a commerce section, which sellers are currently applying to sell through an eBay Business Account, utilizing many of the existing eBay technology.

This is an interesting concept. At first glance, you get the feeling that eBay is just jumping on the global consciousness bandwagon, but adding the community element may just keep it more honest and real than you might initially expect. The joint effort plans to vet the sellers to ensure that the same sustainable and Fair Trade criteria used by Original Goods are met, and they are offering discounts for sellers who start listing before 30 June 2008.

Well, our daughter has finally gone to sleep and now its time to update all you bloggers. We have had an interesting couple of days. We are planning our trip for Labor Day weekend to Arizona to visit Lauren's family and celebrate her parents birthday's. Our days have been so loaded with working and getting everything ready that we haven't had much time for eachother. We are either working, taking care of the baby, cleaning house, laundry, dinner, or shopping for everyday needs that there is just not enough time in the day. Felix and I caught a moment tonight to catch up and we realized that in just those couple of BUSY days, we have missed out on. It felt very good to be in his arms and talk about our days. Felix and I noticed that when we have a lot to do and it runs our days short of spending time with eachother...we begin to miss one another terribly. I felt very relaxed and comforatble spending time with my honey tonight.

Well...Im off to bed.
